Second grade is the year that students learn about two important resources money and time. Unfortunately, we don't have the appropriate resources to teach either. Every year I find that my paper clocks are ripping and that I do not have enough fake money with which students can practice. For second graders, time and money are difficult concepts that take a lot of practice. I would love to create an opportunity for my students to buy and sell things in the classroom. Every child would receive an envelope with money that they can spend by buying things from their classmates. My students would have a lot of fun and at the same time learn. I could also use the money to help review money word problems for the class. These are some of the ways that my students will be using money. Another very important concept that students need to understand is time. During this two years I have created paper clocks so students could have a hands on experience, but my paper clocks rip easily. Another problem is that the hour hand and the minute hand don't move together like a regular clock. If students have a manufactured clock, they will be able to move the hour hand and see how the minute hand changes with it. My students will really benefit by having a clock that they can use.
