I have a classroom full of eager students who want to continue to improve their skills in specialized areas. This year I will be teaching students who are receiving Title I services. I want them to feel comfortable and safe in my classroom by creating an environment that is welcoming and have resources easily available to them.
My school is a high poverty school in which all student receive free school lunch and many students are homeless.
In my classroom, I have students from all backgrounds and learning abilities. Several students are also homeless and come to school to have a safe haven. I want my classroom to be the place where they can work and do their best in through creating an exciting space that engages student learning.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance a literacy-rich classroom that I want my students to have. My classroom library is a place that my students enjoy. I read books from my library to them on the carpet, they complete their work in the library, are able to take home books, and enjoy reading independently! Every book that is in my classroom library is taken care of with love and respect from my students. My students come to school with limited background knowledge and need these resources to help them due to the fact that a majority of them are homeless. Students would benefit from these resources as they would be able to take them home to read to themselves, parents, or siblings to build knowledge they don't necessarily come to school with.
Students are so thankful for the opportunity to read, especially when they come from homes that are not rich in literacy and appreciate the opportunities they have at school.
All of the choices of books have been with my students in mind as I will be working with younger grades also this year and want to ensure that they have books to read from my classroom library. I also want my students to be able to have engaging and interesting conversation during guided reading instruction. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that they can read independently or in groups at their developmental reading level. Research has shown that students who are able to choose books that interest them will read more, and continue to grow as learners.
