When Only the Best Will Do!

My Students

Only the best literature will do! I want my kids to sail the ocean seas with Charlotte Doyle, haunt dark London alleyways with Sherlock Holmes, and paint a picket fence with Tom Sawyer. Nothing takes you away like a book, and my kids are ready for that journey!

My students are an amazing group of 5th graders.

They come from all over Colorado Springs. A truly diverse group of learners, culturally, economically and racially. Yet, they have one thing in common--they are all gifted and talented. My class is one of two in our huge school district that exists to meet the needs of gifted kids who just don't fit in the regular classroom. Some of my kids have all their needs met, but many do not. They can read well, but have never read truly exceptional literature. When I shared Call of the Wild with them, they were transfixed--the writing touched their hearts and inspired them to read more. They need the best literature I can put into their hands.

My Project

My kids will work in small literature study groups as they encounter and explore fine literature. In these groups, they'll have the rich opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, connections, and feelings as they make their way through classic books. They will write, discuss, create art, make music and express themselves dramatically in response to this literature. Most of my kids will not see the ocean, explore the Mississippi, climb the Andes or walk the streets of New York. But they can do all those things and more by reading, discussing, sharing, and being transformed by these classic books.

There's an assumption that gifted kids will "make it" no matter what, just because they're "smart".

That's not true. Gifted kids are a sensitive and unique group, and a real treasure for our world. They don't "just make it". They struggle and frequently fail to reach their potential, a staggering loss to them, and a tragedy for us as well. We need to make sure these kids are nurtured, supported and provided with the very best we can give them. A good book can change a life.
