Think about the last time you had a massage. Did you feel calmer and relaxed afterward? A massage is a session of deep touch pressure. The same principle works with children to help them calm down during tasks where they need to sit still, or at times when they become worked up, or have meltdowns.
My students are kindergarten through fifth grade students with a variety of learning needs who attend a public Montessori magnet school in an urban area in Pennsylvania.
They are learning how to identify their sensory needs and solutions that work for them.
My Project
The deep pressure provided by the pea pod and weighted blanket deliver the feeling of a firm hug, holding, swaddling, or massage to help individuals with anxiety and hyperactivity disorders increase focus and attention. Pressure can diminish anxiety symptoms such as tantrums, self-injury, and repetitive body movement behaviors. The pea pod and weighted blanket will help students relax and ease anxiety as well as improve social skills and communication. The items I am requesting will help my students maintain balance and body awareness in space.

It impacts every aspect of our lives - relationships, communication, self-awareness, and safety.
