My students need basic dependable sewing machines. The machines will be used to teach the students basic sewing skills. Currently, the students are using old machines that were in storage at one of the high schools.

My Students
Our school is an alternative program that serves middle and high school aged students who have made poor choices at school and in the community. Our students typically come to us with moderate to severe behavioral and academic needs.
Academics are not a priority in the lives of the majority of students who attend the alternative program.
The goal is to make learning fun and functional. Hands on experience in the class room entices the reluctant students to participate in the learning activities.
My Project
A retired teacher volunteers to teach a sewing class to my high school students. She comes twice a week and rotates different students into her class. The students learn how to operate and maintain a sewing machine. Currently, they are doing more maintaining than operating as the machines are very old and are no longer usable. New sewing machines would make sewing class easier and more enjoyable for the students to complete projects.
My students need to learn life skills that will benefit them once they are out of high school.
Many of my students are young parents and having sewing skills allow them to take care of the basic needs of their growing children. The students will learn to mend clothing, use simple patterns to make clothing and gifts. It is our goal to provide the students with life skills in addition to academic skills.
