Help me give my students two copies of fifteen different novels to read for the 2019-2020 Elementary Battle of the Books competition that our school district hosts each spring.
I have heard it said many times that there is no such thing as a person who hates to read. There are those who love to read, and those who just haven't found the right book. My hope with this project is to help students love to read even more than they already do.
I teach at a Title I elementary school where over 20 countries are represented by my students and their families.
100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. For many of our students, English is not the first language spoken at home. A lot of my students end up being translators and helpers for their parents as they go about their day. The majority of our students ride the bus to school each day as well.
My Project
Each year our school district hosts an Elementary Battle of the Books, or as the students call it, E-BOB. Each school that participates chooses a team of 4th and 5th graders. Each student is required to read 15 different novels, becoming an expert on 3-5 of them. Students compete against different schools in a question-answer game show style format competition. I am asking for 2 copies of each book, so the students can share from my set of books as well as the library.
This competition turns good readers into amazing readers, and reluctant readers learn to LOVE reading!
Even though I am primarily a 4th grade math teacher, I still love to promote reading. My classroom is on the corner of the 4th and 5th grade halls and having these books available will help me to still have a way to encourage reading. The list of books changes from year to year, but the joy of reading will remain forever. The books are the battle, but Reading always wins!
