I wanted to make sure I had a solid plan in place for how your generous donation would be used before I sent an update.\r\nOnce I was finally settled, the iPads you donated immediately became an essential part of our daily learning. I cannot overstate how much of a difference it has made to have additional technology in the classroom. In a world where digital literacy is no longer optional, your gift gave my students equitable access to tools that help them learn, create, and explore.\r\nEach day, we use the iPads across multiple subjects and activities. During our literacy block, students rotate through stations using programs like i-Ready, Wonders, and ABCmouse. i-Ready allows me to differentiate instruction based on each child's diagnostic data. Students who need extra phonics practice get it, while others who are ready to push into comprehension and vocabulary can do that too. Wonders connects directly to our core curriculum, so students can reread stories, practice grammar skills, and listen to texts read aloud. ABCmouse has been a favorite for my early learners who need foundational skills in a fun, game-based format.\r\nWe also use Seesaw as our digital portfolio and communication tool. Students record themselves reading, explain their math thinking, and upload pictures of their writing. Parents love getting that window into the classroom, especially those who can't volunteer during the day. Seesaw gives students ownership of their learning because they choose what to share and reflect on why it shows growth.\r\nThe iPads are set up on a rotation schedule so every student gets daily access. I run small groups, and while I'm working with one group on guided reading or math, other students are engaged in meaningful, independent practice on the iPads. They also use them for collaborative work. Students will partner up to research science topics, create presentations, or play educational games that build teamwork and problem-solving. I've watched students who were shy about participating in whole-group lessons light up when they get to explain something using the iPad.\r\nBeyond academics, the iPads have helped with classroom community. We use them for morning check-ins, brain breaks, and creative projects like digital art and storytelling. Having this technology means I can meet a wider range of learning styles and keep students engaged throughout the day.\r\nYour donation didn't just give us devices. It gave us flexibility, access, and opportunity. It showed my students that someone outside our school walls believes in them and their education. I have attached screenshots of those videos, but I wish you could see and hear them! Students carefully sequenced events, captured key themes, and presented their stories as miniature films. It was incredible to watch them bring the text to life while demonstrating strong comprehension and creativity (all while secretly improving their writing abilities). \r\n\r\nThis work goes far beyond reading a novel. Through these texts, students are building empathy and cultural awareness while strengthening reading comprehension, critical thinking, and discussion skills. They are learning to analyze perspectives, consider moral dilemmas, and connect literature to real-world issues.\r\n\r\nOur fourth graders have extended this thinking into research on endangered species within North Carolina, examining the human and environmental factors contributing to population decline. They are asking difficult questions about responsibility, conservation, and stewardship.\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, our fifth graders are currently reading Bull Run and engaging in meaningful conversations about how war divides families and communities. They are also exploring current events, making connections between historical conflicts and the world they see today. They are preparing for a monologue movie project in which they will step into the voice of a historical character. While winter weather and over two weeks of snow delays have slowed our timeline, the depth of thinking and discussion has been powerful.\r\n\r\nNext fall, I will begin The Phantom Tollbooth with fifth grade first, and my current fourth graders are already eagerly anticipating their turn with this imaginative and thought-provoking novel.\r\n\r\nYour generosity is nurturing not only strong readers but also compassionate, informed thinkers.
