Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, enthusiastic and caring first graders. They love to learn new information and listen to stories read by the teacher. Each student found a love for reading in kindergarten. I taught kindergarten for the last ten years so I need new materials to keep my students excited about reading. I am lucky to have some of my kindergarten students in first grade this year. I am excited to watch them grow as readers. They attend an urban public school in Connecticut, where literacy resources are difficult to come by unless materials are donated. Many students do not have access to the necessary literacy resources to grow as learners. It is crucial that my students acquire the essential literacy skills needed to read and comprehend on grade level from experiences in school.
My students need leveled independent reading books to give them opportunities to read, comprehend and open their minds to new information.
It is important that my students make good reading progress despite the challenging obstacles they face daily. Each child deserves every opportunity in school to excel in literacy in order to educate their own families and be prepared for higher level learning.
My Project
My first graders need access to a variety of texts at their reading levels in order to develop fluency and comprehension skills. It is essential that they have many opportunities to read different texts. Each child has different interests and I would like to provide all of my students with appropriate texts. First graders love reading if they have books that they can connect to and understand.
They will increase their mental stamina as readers by using reading materials that challenge their thinking daily.
My students will work in groups with the literacy resources to provide each other with engaging literacy experiences. My students will learn how to be responsible for their own learning because they can review literacy skills independently through engaging activities. The literacy resources will also provide high-interest literacy learning to students who need every opportunity to be motivated to read on grade level.
