My students need an additional iPad in the classroom so that every two students can access a pad. My classroom also needs 10 iPad covers for protection during usage.
Complementary Structure and Function? What? Difficult concepts to my 7th graders but guide them to engaging concept mapping apps and let them create their own learning experiences? So rewarding for all of us. For my students struggling with learning challenges - a pic is worth a 1000 words!
We are a medium sized middle school, about 800 students.
I teach 220 7th grade science students over six periods. We reside in a middle class community but also serve students outside our community, mainly through the NCLB (no child left behind) directive. Our classes are collaborative push-ins - all special education need students attend general education classes so we serve a multiple of needs in our classroom, including many students who are English Language Learners (ELL). Our school is a California Distinguished School and we promote positive character develop programs that take the focus off negative behaviors. The faculty is highly collaborative and enjoy learning right along with our students.
My Project
With more iPads in the classroom we can provide one for every two students. These students can collaborate on concept mapping, looking at images of objects and processes that are difficult to visualize - photosynthesis, cell respiration, cell division, cell parts, protein synthesis and DNA replication and this is only the first quarter! Currently we have 10 iPads and serve app 36 students in each class.
We also need 10 iPad covers to protect the ones we have.
The impact will be enormous - if students feel more compelled to engage in biology and not be put off by the difficult vocabulary and concepts I believe we will have more students enter sciences for a career path.
