What's That, William? Understanding Shakespeare

My students need 30 modern language versions of Julius Caesar beside Shakespeare's original words to fully comprehend Shakespeare's Elizabethan language.

My Students

My students look at Shakespeare's original words and panic, "This is not English!" To enhance comprehension and perhaps foster a love for good literature, students need the parallel text version of Julius Caesar to optimize understanding. My students will be able to see both versions at one time.

My tenth grade English II students attend a small, rural South Carolina high school that is classified as high poverty.

They range from gifted and talented to special needs and are grouped homogeneously. Many plan to be college bound while others hope to earn a high school diploma and join the work force.

My Project

The parallel text version of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar offers students all the beauty and magic of Shakespeare's original words with a modern translation side by side. This helps eliminate the intimidation and confusion. Instead of, "What does this mean?" students can focus in on Shakespeare's actual words. Students are amazed to realize that Shakespeare tells an exciting story that is based on a crucial time in history, written primarily in poetry with a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, and meant to be performed on stage!

My students deserve the opportunity to best comprehend the master, Shakespeare, and explore the universal issues his characters encounter.

For some of them, their high school experience may be their only opportunity. For others, it may be only the beginning. Whichever paths they take, I hope to foster a love Shakespeare and good literature in my classes. Your support can help meet that goal.
