My Students

Do you remember learning how to use a computer? Just like learning languages, it is much easier to learn to use new technology when it is introduced at a young age. I want my students to be exposed to touch screens and interactive learning applications.

My students can't wait for computer time.

I have a few desktops in my room which are from the 1980's. The kids race to play Frog Munchers which is a mathematical game. Unfortunately, technology is not the first priority in our school district due to a severe budget crisis in our area. It is likely that our district is going to go bankrupt which makes the next few years even tougher with staffing reductions, furloughs and program cuts. Although it may not seem like a game changing device, this iTouch will bring excitement into the classroom and at home with the parents. The students can't wait to have their turn using it.

My Project

With borrowed iTouches, my students jumped right in and started to experiment with the touch screen. While it can be challenging for us teachers to learn ourselves, the kids seem to easily figure out the touch strokes and maneuvers long before the teachers do. There are so many potential usages for the iTouch. My primary use will be to employ as a listening center until I build up my knowledge of opportunities. This use is a 21st century version of an old technique (book-on-tape). The iTouch allows for customization for small groups of students which can often be challenging in a class of 32. The iTouch is small and easy to move with students such that they can relocate to a different part of the room, and I don't have to dedicate an entire space. Also, I can use this device for specialized focus when children are either in need of extra help and/or challenge.

We need to think outside of the box to handle the crisis in education in our community.
