Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My wonderful 6th graders are becoming independent learners and a huge part of that is teaching them that they can choose what they want to read while guiding them on how to do that.
My students are constantly on the lookout for the next book to read.
They each will tell me about their favorite book, and I always suggest that they find other books written by that author, in the same genre or on the same topic. Which means that we need to grow our library! With students at a variety of reading levels with a variety of interests, we need a variety of book sets to meet their needs!
My Project
My students commonly will tell me, "I only like this book." By introducing them to book series or author collections they are able to read more material that interests them, helping them grow as independent learners.
The students in my school rarely get to hold a new book, let alone a whole set of new books and to give that gift would be amazing!
By providing my students with full book series it allows them to set the goal of finishing the whole set. As a class, we can work through book series together in small group read aloud which will allow us to have literature circles, comprehension conversations and student written book reviews.
