This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine being a kindergartner and not being able to create your own imaginary world of play? Throughout the years, educational trends come and go, but one thing has stood the test of time: dramatic play.
I teach at an inner city school in New Jersey.
The 5 and 6 year olds in my kindergarten are smart, motivated and delightful. Many come from families who are first or second generation immigrants. These families are close-knit and want the very best for their children. Most are very involved in their child's education. Every day, my students come in excited to learn. My desire is to provide a learning environment that will spark creativity and imagination as well as foster the development of social, cognitive and physical skills.
My Project
How exciting to imagine the day my students arrive and I have set up a brand new kitchen area as the centerpiece of our dramatic play center! It will be a joyful day indeed! These are children who are content with very little. I want to provide an environment that will excite, encourage and inspire the highest levels of learning and creativity. I know that a play kitchen will do just that. Research bears out the fact that dramatic play is essential in developing physical, cognitive and social skills. Something as simple as a play kitchen can have a tremendous impact as it inspires creativity and social development in these 5 and 6 year olds.
Doesn't it seem crazy that a good dramatic play center can have a major impact on the early development of a child?
But it's true! A well-known child developmentalist named David Elkind says that "Through dramatic play, children learn to assert themselves in a way to build their competence in later adult roles." By supporting this project, you can directly impact children who do not enjoy so many of the resources and advantages of their wealthier counterparts.
