My Students

Some of my students have not yet discovered the true enjoyment of the written word. By having enough good quality copies of the novel, they have a better chance of falling in love with reading. We will be incorporating reading and language skills while immersing ourselves in good literature.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

Some are from well-educated, affluent families while others are from the low-income housing area of our town. We also have students who are new to the United States. Family units range from students living with both parents, a single parent, grandparents, a relative, a guardian or foster parents. Many of our students are involved in community sports such as football, soccer, tennis, swimming, baseball, softball and cross country. We are fortunate that our school building is a landmark in the community, having served as a college, high school and now as a middle school. Our school is located atop a hill with a beautiful, park like campus. Because of the age of our building, many of our students are sitting in class where their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles once sat! This year our school wide focus is on improving literacy. We are planning many exciting events for our students to celebrate their success.

My Project

While using the novels, my students will be exposed to good literature through the adventures of two characters the same age as many of them. The students will be able to identify with how people judge other people according to their looks. They will be able to identify foreshadowing, flashbacks, and theme. They will be introduced to southern dialect and understand how the author uses it to authenticate the story.

As we work our way through the novel, the students will become very attached to the characters.

They will see the characters go through the same struggles many of them face as six graders; insecurity, trying to fit in, making friends, getting to know new family members, and trying to understand people's motives. This will help my students as they watch how the characters handle these situations. They will finish the novel study with a better understanding of human nature and kindness.
