My class consists of 23 first grade students between the ages of six and seven. They come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have varying learning experiences. We are a Title I school, located in an urban area. We are a primary school, serving Child Development, Kindergarten, and First Grade students.
It is absolutely necessary to provide students with authentic hands-on learning experiences that can be connected to real world situations in the area of literacy in order to set them up for a lifetime of success.
Due to our continued population growth, there are not enough resources and programs available to accommodate our students. Thus, not every classroom is equipped with necessary supplies to enhance our students' learning. Providing students with materials that promote media literacy will help them develop a true appreciation for the world they live in. Most of our young students struggle with nonfiction text, and do not like reading it. Providing them with developmentally appropriate media literature can turn these negative feelings into positive experiences.
My Project
Subscriptions to Scholastic News and Time for Kids will give my young students the opportunity to explore and comprehend media literacy concepts, and help them develop a life-long love of reading.
The ability to read and the joy that one gets out of reading serves as the foundation for a lifetime of success both academically and non-academically.
More and more students are struggling with reading; and even good readers are choosing not to read. In order to motivate students to seek knowledge through literacy, they must be exposed to various types of text, including media literacy. Scholastic News will engage students on various topics that they can relate to, while building the necessary reading and comprehension skills. It will allow them to explore specific topics that are current and interesting. Time for Kids will also provide up-to-date real world topics for students to relate to and learn from. It will also help students build better reading and analytical skills.
As a first grade teacher, it is my goal to instill a love of reading in my students. Subscriptions to Scholastic News and Time For Kids will be used to introduce students to the world of media literacy. It will serve as a solid introduction to topics that we see in the news. It will help them develop their own views and determine where there place is in this ever-changing world. With your help, these children will have the opportunity to engage in their learning and understanding of media literacy.
