Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Connecting math content to real life is a key element in generating student interest and engagement. In addition, applying concepts and formulas to real-life situations that students can see and relate to provides students with the opportunity to truly comprehend academic content and have ownership of their learning. The use of this display case will enable me to create a "store" simulation with realia (real-life objects), which will grab student attention and connect content to real-life situations. Many students have difficulty visualizing situations, so making situations concrete helps them understand scenarios and think through problems. Over time, students learn to represent the concrete situation with a visual representation and with mathematical language. In this way, students build academic vocabulary, math reasoning, and fluency translating a scenario into math equations.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, but you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

Students will be able to actually see how relatable real-life situations play out. Their attention will be grabbed by the visual appeal of the display. They will be able to participate in constructing their own understanding by providing input on display content and creating scenarios (word problems) that involves the higher-level thinking of applying content knowledge and constructing their own understanding.
