My students need an incubator with an automatic turner, a chick brooder with feeder, water fountain, and heat source, fertilized chicken eggs, and chick life cycle set.
Please help my first graders get beyond admiring pictures of baby chicks in their science books, to actually experiencing the birth of real chicks as they hatch in our new classroom incubator. Help them develop a true understanding of life cycles and an appreciation for the miracle of life.
My students live in a rural area and most live below the poverty line.
Learning progresses slowly with pencil and paper skills, but when I incorporate hands-on experiences and shared learning projects, then light bulbs really go on! They are bright, inquisitive children, who are eager to learn, but have had limited life experiences to build upon.
My Project
During our life sciences unit, students will read about the life cycle of baby chicks, and will make booklets and time-lines to show daily development of the chick inside the egg. But in order for the children to make a real connection, I would like to obtain an incubator and fertile eggs, so they can not only see, but actually feel, the living chicks.
Even though our school is in a rural area, very few families farm.
The children know chicks hatch from eggs, and they have seen pictures in books, but it is still far removed from their every day life. Putting real eggs in an incubator, observing them daily, watching as they hatch, and finally snuggling downy chicks in their hands, will provide an educational life experience they will never forget. Who knows- maybe we will also encourage future farming careers!
