My Green Team students are an exciting crew who range from Pre K to 5th grade and have a common interest in science and the environment specifically, our school community environment. They are ambassadors for our school's sustainability program and environmental leaders to our Pre-K and Kindergarten students who are beginning their learning of the environment and scientific inquiry. They are passionate about improving the schools sustainability and have been planning and designing the new Outdoor Learning Garden in the school's courtyard.
My Project
The Green Team has designed our school's courtyard to be an organic Virginia native plant haven for the students in our school of all grade levels to use as an outdoor classroom. The work we do together builds relationships, grows school wide knowledge of plants, life-cycles and participation of conservation. Along the way we celebrate little organic green wins together each day and are excited about the expansion work we have planned ahead.
Our project is to develop an irrigation system and shade for the Outdoor Learning Garden in our school’s courtyard.
We began our design in the fall with 7 raised garden beds that grow, herbs, vegetables, and VA native pollinators. As we started to develop an irrigation system we quickly realized that the center garden beds get an over exposure of sunlight. We are a team that likes to ask why and what if we did this….. so to answer the problem of too much sun the students came up with the idea of 2 raised sun sails that will offer the coverage necessary to encourage growth of the gardens. We are also in need of a new garden hose that we can use as a level 1 watering system in conjunction with our 2 rain barrels.
The Green Team makes a positive impact on the school through their weekly Green Team Tip of the Day PSA's for school wide broadcast, promoting sustainability programs such as Bubbles Not Balloons, and running the daily recycling program and cant wait to expand our Outdoor Learning Garden!
