What were you reading in 1963?

My students need 35 high-interest award winning novels, including "A Year Down Yonder", "Time Machine" and "The Call of the Wild".

My 7th and 8th graders live in rural Vermont; our elementary school is high-poverty with children who have limited exposure and limited access to the outside world. Most students in my class are behind grade-level in reading and writing.

I spent the summer cleaning trash out of my new classroom only to discover in the process that there were no appropriate books for my children to read (only a few books so old that they are falling apart). Since many of these kids do not have access to books at home, it is imperative that they have novels in the classroom to check out for independent reading. Our small school library (think cubicle!) focuses on the younger students and does not have a lot to offer my 7th and 8th graders.

My babies are so excited for these 35 award-winning novels. They helped me choose the books that they wanted to read. We chose these particular books because many of them describe a type of life that is foreign to them. With these 35 books every child will be able to share in the joy of reading at home.

Your donation to our classroom library will make a difference in how well students will perform when they move to high school next year (or the year after). If I have high-interest, award winning books to get them hooked on reading, then I can also improve their reading ability before they leave me at the end of this year.
