What We Want: Engaging & Empowering Historical Narratives

My students need 35 copies of "Mare's War".

My Students

Ezra Pound once said, "The greatest gift is the passion for reading." Sadly, that passion all too often ebbs during middle school. My students need books that will grab them!

I teach social studies in a large and diverse middle school in NYC.

A significant majority of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch. My 8th grade students are energetic and eager to learn. They respond wonderfully to cooperative and technology-based learning opportunities and display an infectious curiosity about the world in which we live.

My Project

"Mare's War" by Tanita Davis tells the story of an African American grandmother on a cross-country road trip with her granddaughters. The teenagers are soon captivated by her tales of serving in the Women's Air Corps during WWII. This is a Coretta Scott King honor book from 2010 and will inspire my students to learn more about the impact of World War II on women, African Americans, and the nation as a whole.

Too often SS teachers rely on textbooks to convey course content.

As a result, sadly, middle school students lose interest and passion for reading in the SS classroom. This narrative will touch my students at a much deeper level and provide a memorable, inter-generational glimpse of life during wartime
