Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my elementary school come from a variety of backgrounds. My elementary school is a large school. This year I am teaching 4th grade DLI and have 46 students. Most of the students in my class speak another language in their home. The majority of my students live below the poverty line. Many of them are refugees.

Despite the hardships the students face, they come to school eager and ready to learn.

The students in my classroom work hard and are preparing for careers and college. I want to have all the tools necessary to help them achieve their goals and become successful learners.

My Project

My students have felt the impact of distance learning and COVID-19. The pandemic widened preexisting achievement gaps, hitting vulnerable students the hardest. Many students are now one to two years behind in their literacy and math skills. My students depend on notebooks for math, writing, reading, and language lessons. I am asking for consumable materials to help my students create physical and digital "learning toolboxes" where they can refer back to content throughout the year.

When students engage and record their learning, they will begin to close the achievement gap due to the pandemic.

When more students are involved in the class, their confidence increases, and they will drive their learning proactively rather than passively. My students will need highlighters, notebooks, graph paper, page markers, personal ear buds, and post its to help individualize their learning and reengage with the content in the classroom. I will also need an external CD drive to continue to provide digital content from my laptop.
