What, Our Water Quality?

My students need 5 water test kits to investigate the abiotic conditions affecting organisms that live in nearby streams.

My Students

Science is an important process for learning how to solve problems, not just the memorization of facts. Students have fun and learn more when they are exploring questions that they care about, such as those about the environment they live in.

I teach Chemistry to 11th-12th grade students at a high school in Maryland serving mostly low income families.

One of my goals for this course is to make it largely inquiry-based, such that, with my guidance, students are directing their own learning. In addition, I want to make the course relevant so that students are more excited to come to class and participate. In order to achieve both of these goals, I plan on incorporating projects about important health and environmental issues that relate to my students' lives throughout the semester.

My Project

One of these projects is an investigation of the water quality of various streams close to the school. For students, this project will entail learning about the various pollutants that can contaminate water in Maryland, testing the effects of one pollutant (salt) on respiration in leaf litter, and researching various ways that individuals and groups can reduce the amount of pollution they create. In order to determine the pollutants that affect nearby streams, I already have a dissolved oxygen kit and an electrical conductivity probe. However, these measurements will not give students the full picture of water quality; they also need to know the levels of nitrates and phosphates, the pH, the hardness of the water, and the presence of coliform bacteria, all of which can be measured by the water test kits.

Having these kits will allow students to complete a relevant, inquiry-based science project, which too few of them have had an opportunity to do.

Furthermore, this project will not only engage students, but it will also help them gain valuable inquiry skills that they can utilize in college and in their careers.
