Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At Jones Middle School, in the Port Richmond area of North Philadelphia, students are naturally curious. The diversity of the neighborhood, the influx of recent immigrants, and the fast pace of the city combine to make my 8th graders interested in their world and their country. Unfortunately, the school faces many challenges to educational success.
Teachers struggle to supplement the curriculum with relevant, every day material that connects the classroom to the student's life. American history is full of exciting stories of our country's past, and it is a challenge to show students how it connects to their present and future lives.
A solution to this struggle would be providing students with exposure to a magazine text on their reading level that focuses on history, politics, and current events. Every week, students would read their news magazine, and have the chance to make connections in the classroom to their history as it is being written.
Having their own copies of Time for Kids Magazine would allow students to read about what is going on in the country and world, and it would give them the opportunity to see the connections of students all over the world. It would also give them opportunities and exposure to the news, and it would provide them with extra reading material that might not be available to them otherwise. You can help to boost reading skills and student's awareness of their place in history.
TIME For Kids Magazine- World Report Edition w/ TFK Around the World (grades 4-6). Pricing is valid for orders placed after March 2007. After August 15th of current school year, pricing will remain in effect but TIME For Kids reserves the right to prorate issue quantity and free gifts. Only valid for orders in quantities of 10 or more. Orders for less than 10 subscriptions will NOT be fulfilled.
