Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

93 eighth graders vs. 2 Humanities teachers. My co-teacher and I tackle the language arts needs of the eighth graders at our charter school on a daily basis. Though many may shake with fear at this thought, we love it. Our kids are inspired and insightful and it is truly a joy to spend our days with them. Our school is located in a high-need area of California, where many of our students do not have the resources at home that so many of us have always taken for granted.

"We need more supplies!" Our school is only in its third year of operation, and this places our classrooms at an extreme disadvantage. Books, markers, and reference materials usually get stock piled year after year as old teachers leave and new teachers come in. We just have not had the time for this to happen yet. With only a tiny portion of our charter budget allotted for classroom supplies we are simply grasping at straws.

"Miss, I need a dictionary." I hear this phrase more times a day than you may think. Many of our students are English Language Learners, and so we place a stronger than normal emphasis on vocabulary development. Sadly, dictionaries are just one of the items that we do not have stocked in every classroom. Ideally students would use them on a daily basis, but we have to share the 25 we have with the other 12 classrooms in our school.

Your donation of dictionaries for our classroom will give our students the tool they need to help themselves be successful. A thorough knowledge of the English language is necessary for success inside of school and out. Our English language learners are often at a disadvantage, but daily vocabulary practice, with ESL friendly dictionaries, will give our students the support they need to achieve. We truly appreciate your consideration of our project.
