Help me give my students a feeling of inclusion by communicating and understanding English using translator pens, exploring different cultures through books and activities, and giving them snacks when they come to school hungry.
I teach about 60 students who are learning English as their second language in grades K-1 and 6-8. They come from all walks of life, but, most are newcomers to the United States, and many are underprivileged. It is very hard to come to a new country and a new school not knowing the language. Imagine how scary that would be. So, what hapPENS when the students can understand our language while in school?
I want to make understanding and communicating easier as they ease their way into our language by allowing them to use translator pens.
Whether it's translating worksheets or comprehending books that aren't available in their native language, these devices will play a crucial role in their English language growth. In addition to the pens, I am asking for books that will help them understand other cultures.
While the main goal is to foster English language acquisition, it's equally important for students to participate in classroom activities alongside their peers. These devices will help them by promoting inclusion and engagement within the classroom environment.
Furthermore, given the diverse cultural backgrounds of my English learner students, language barriers often impede their ability to form connections with their classmates. By providing translator devices, we aim to break down these barriers and encourage meaningful interaction, ultimately nurturing friendships and social integration.
I am also asking for snacks to keep in my classroom. For many of these students, they only get the two meals served at school each day. They are often hungry, especially towards the end of the day. These snacks give them a little filler until they get their next meal.
With your support, we can ensure that every student, regardless of their language proficiency, has the tools they need to succeed academically and socially in our school community.
