What Good Is a Classroom Without Great Books?

My students need 1-5 copies each of 20+ book titles, including "Twilight" and "Breaking Dawn".

My Students

Hardworking middle school students in a high need community are in dire need of independent reading books. Without books, some of my students will never leave their neighborhood. New books will open doors for them that are usually closed.

I teach sixth grade in a new NYC public school, and due to budget cuts, we have been supplied with very limited libraries for our classrooms.

We do not have nearly enough books to provide a book for each child on his or her reading level. In fact, the sixty avid readers in my classroom do not even have enough books to get through January! NYS reading standards state that each student must read 25 books each year. Please help my motivated students reach that goal by providing new engaging books that can satisfy their desire to learn. Each book was chosen to expose the students to new diverse people and interesting places. I anticipate great book conversations developing from the complex plot lines and characters.

My Project

I have chosen books with characters and story lines that will engage my students. I hope these books will take my students into the lives of characters they can relate to, admire, and remember forever. I chose classics such as Of Mice and Men as well as new popular titles such as the Twilight saga.

Through your generosity, sixty NYC public school students will read, learn, experience new people and places, and grow.

You will help these young boys and girls learn to love reading and this is a gift that will last throughout their lifetimes! Thank you!
