This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Wait, there's TWO Pacific Oceans?" ~ Jose P, 6th grade, 2013.
It's not like we don't try. Despite years and a variety of teaching methods, my students still struggle with basic geographical concepts. I constantly need to improve my instruction to help them learn this invaluable material.
My students come from a wide variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Because they are tested heavily in English and math throughout elementary school, they are frequently less exposed to social studies than we would like when they enter middle school.
My Project
I plan to really integrate geographic content into weekly lessons, as well as to pursue a big geography project for the second time. The teacher materials will help to focus my geography curriculum so that there is a reasonable progression of the material. The globes, maps, and atlases will make it possible for my students to see the relationship between different places, as well as to get an accurate representation of the countries and landforms we're learning about.
Previously, students chose a country and had to do in-depth research and analysis of that country's history, culture, and politics. They learned an enormous amount about the world around them while applying social studies standards that can be used to access any type of geographical or historical curriculum. The individual student passports will make the activities more exciting and fun, and the research materials will help them find accurate and unbiased information.
We will no longer have to get research from photocopied atlases.
My students will each be able to look on a globe to find important places that we study. They will have a much greater opportunity to be actually familiarize themselves with the world around them.
