What Does a Million Look Like?

My students need a 36" cube box to be used to collect pennies they bring to class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What does a million look like? My students will be collecting pennies to see what a million looks like. To keep the pennies secure, students will be constructing a 36" cube box in which to keep the pennies. Pennies collected will be donated to the local food bank at the end of the project.

My students are sixth grade students in a rural community.

They are energetic and eager to learn. Student in our school love to help others in the community. Our class goal is to collect a million pennies. We will write about what a million looks like, and then we will be donating all pennies collected to the local food bank. In constructing the box, students will also be learning how to handle tools that may be used in everyday life.

My Project

The objective of this project is to build a 36” cube box in which students will collect pennies. The students will be involved in the actual build of the box, learning how to properly handle tools that may be used in everyday life. The students will write a descriptive essay at the beginning of the project on what they think a million will look like. The pennies will then be donated to the local food bank during the annual school food drive on behalf of the sixth grade class. If a million is not reached by the annual food drive, the students will be discuss the length of time it would take to reach a million pennies. All pennies collected to this point will be donated. Our goal is a million pennies, which is equivalent to $10,000. The project will supply my students with first hand knowledge of helping others out in the community as well as how to use tools that may be used in everyday life. My students will learn the importance of helping others.

It is important for my students to be able to take pride in knowing they constructed the box that will hold the pennies.

The box will be constructed out of plexi-glass and plywood so that students can see how close they are to reaching their goal. By actually helping to construct the box, my students will learn how to handle tools that they may use in everyday life. The project will impact my students by allowing them to be an active part in helping others in our community.
