My students need high-interest low-vocabulary books, like What Was the Great Depression, to learn and appreciate history.

My Students
I teach an amazing small group of 8th grade diverse learners on the Southside of Chicago. We are a neighborhood school that is located in a predominantly blue-collar community. All of my students come from minority families, where sadly education is limited and its importance is not emphasized.
The group of children that I service are a happy and friendly bunch who are eager to learn.
My group of students are well below grade level, and find comprehending grade level text beyond frustrating. Many of them are discouraged and make no attempt to participate or complete in daily discussions and assignments.
My Project
Receiving these books would allow my students an opportunity to read a grade /age appropriate subject, but at their ability level. In the Blizzard of the Blue Moon, students would be introduced to the Great Depression and gain a simple understanding of this desperate time in U.S. History.
Feeding their new thirst for knowledge, students would read What Was the Great Depression?.
In addition, I plan to use video clips from movies and documents from primary sources, to reinforce our reading.
Finally, with the use of Who was Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, we will conduct a research project on how these people helped guide the United States government and it's people during one of the America's darkest period.
