What Can Urban Students Learn from Owl Barf?

Help me give my students owl pellets for a food web lab project in Biology class. Barn owl pellets are safe and fun to use, and let students discover what rodent bones are left undigested.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve a community that consists mainly of low-income students, immigrant students, and students of color. My students have tremendous amounts of school spirit and actively participate as members of their communities. Gun violence and gang-related trauma are tragically commonplace within the school and frequently effect my students inside and outside the classroom. However, the hope and strength of my students and their communities are unwavering.

My students are always eager to engage in activities that are relevant to their experiences or intersect with their ever-developing identities.

My Project

Students at my school have had little to no access to hands-on lab materials for far too long. If we are to prepare students for a twenty-first century workforce, one that demands flexibility, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking, then we have to meet our students halfway. I do this on a daily basis by working tirelessly to provide students with innovative learning experiences that allow them to investigate and understand the world around them. However, I am often limited in the ways in which I can introduce students to innovative science because equipment is costly.

In this project, I am asking for support in providing my students with access to hands-on lab materials that they can use to understand the natural environment in which they live.

This is fundamental to today's STEM education and students appreciation of the environment in which they live. Students will immediately and directly be using the lab materials and supplies in this project such as owl pellets to engage in inquiry-based learning to uncover the food web, identify rodent prey, and better understand wildlife and their connection to it. I'm trying to prepare students to be scientists, and they need access to materials to be truly prepared. Please consider supporting this project and help me in my pursuit of equal access to STEM for all students.
