Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Though I hate to start my statement this way, it's the truth: a majority of students on our campus are not avid readers. While we of course have a dedicated group of literature lovers, we have a substantial group of students who are less confident, less able and less interested in reading. As a librarian, I show up every day with a mission to change the outlook for those kids. We serve students from a variety of ethnicities, cultures, and learning abilities, but they have all found refuge, at some point, in the library's physical space and it's collection of books.
Our students thrive when they have reading choices that are accessible, that reflect who they are, and that center on topics of student interest.
We strive to develop a library collection geared toward our ever changing student population. At the core of this collection are our graphic novels.
My Project
Nothing lures in a struggling reader like graphic novels. Graphic novels or comics, as they used to be called, are not just about super heroes anymore. These rich and vivid books appeal to students with their easily digestible format and young adult story lines. Graphic Novels are so popular on our campus that we cannot keep our shelves stocked; in September, 50% or our checkouts were for graphic novels or manga (Japanese comics). Students will check out two books a day and return the next day, hungry for more.
Because students so voraciously read graphic novels, it is imperative that we expand our library collection.
Budget restraints have hit school libraries, just as they have everywhere else on campus. We simply cannot afford all the books we need. Funding this project would give our entire campus access to a wonderful, award-winning, and diverse graphic novel collection.
