The books chosen for this project will serve my students in two ways. First, reading these books will allow us to participate in the district-wide battle of the books. Schools from across our district will field teams who have all read the same books, and we will compete in the spring to see which team READS SUPREME! The second benefit is the exposure to a shared and diverse reading experience. Reading these books written by authors from a variety of backgrounds exposes students to new people, places, and ideas and helps them find similarities in human experiences. Reading with a group of peers also creates a real-world bond and gives students practice sharing their own ideas and interpretations while honoring the ideas and interpretations of others.
