My Students

I have 25 bright and enthusiastic second grade students, with a wide variety of reading abilities, in a school situated in a primarily rural community. We have limited access to a public library. Students are eager to receive books and other supplies that are related to their learning goals. Currently, I supplement their standard reading series, provided by the local board of education, with books from the local public library and/or from my personal collection.

My students would benefit greatly from additional trade books for our classroom library, which will enable them to further build their reading skills.

My Project

My second grade students have a wide range of reading levels. I chose book sets for small group reading that will appeal to beginning readers, as well as books by WV native Cynthia Rylant. I like to emphasize her humble roots in the mountains of WV and her rise to success as an author to inspire my little mountaineers.

Additionally, these materials will not only benefit my homeroom students, but will be shared with students from other second grade classrooms during our reading intervention time.

The books I chose will be used in small group settings, during read aloud, and will be available for students to check-out and take home to read.
