Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school in South Carolina where our motto is "Every Student Counts, and Every Moment Matters!" My students come from diverse backgrounds and all receive 100% free breakfast and lunch at school. Many come from homes where English is not spoken. Some family members come from countries where they were unable to receive an education.
My awesome students come to school eager to learn each day.
We work to ensure our learning is engaging, effective, and fun! I also recognize that, as a teacher, my job is to provide more than just academic knowledge to students. I strive to teach the whole child and make sure all of their needs are met daily!
My Project
This project was written to provide my second grade students with six sets of magnetic letters. I teach in a high-poverty school where around 68% of our students are learning English as their second language. Even in second grade, the students are needing a lot of exposure to the English language, especially with spelling and understanding how the letter sounds in English can be similar and different to the letter sounds in their native language.
We will use these magnetic letters throughout many different times of our school day to help students practice spelling and reading words.
We will use them during our Word Study and Literacy Station blocks, where students will learn about different spelling patterns, vowel teams, digraphs, prefixes and suffixes, etc. They will then use their new knowledge to create words with these types of word parts. We will also use these kits during guided reading to work on skills each student individually still needs further practice with.
Please consider helping fund this project so that my students have these necessary materials to help them succeed. My students truly are "attracted" (Get it? Magnets?) to learning and would love to have these materials in the room for use!
