My 5th Grade classroom is a diverse one with a lot of kids living in poverty. I have students with many different learning styles and many different backgrounds. I teach science and math and although we're all trying to learn the same particular science or math standard they all can't access the the material.
These students have not had access to science texts in grades K-4, making it nearly impossible for them to compete with more affluent communities on high stakes tests.
These students need to be exposed to non-fiction texts at a level they can read. Kids LOVE science, but if they're not exposed their natural curiosity can not be sparked.
If you donate texts that they can read, I will give them the time to read them and support their reading with hands-on activities.
