Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have over four hundred fifty students in our school that range from kindergarten to grade 5. As the only art teacher in the school, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach and to get to know every child. My students are inquisitive, intelligent, and kind. They truly enjoy learning and love to come to school. Our school is culturally diverse, and over seventy percent of our students speak Spanish as the primary language in their home.

My Project

In our art classes, students learn about many different art materials and methods. Younger students get incredibly excited by the joy of squishy, wet, wonderful paint. Joyous as this may be, it sometimes overshadows the lesson at hand. For this reason, we must start our color-mixing unit with a different art supply.

My younger students need watercolor crayons to practice color mixing.

Watercolor crayons allow for layering of colors in a thoughtful way BEFORE adding water...and getting messy. Students will learn how to make new colors through mixing practice. Once colors are layered, students can use paintbrush to add water, and experience the magic of creating all new colors.

Students will use these watercolor crayons as a stepping stone material on their way to eventually using watercolor paint and tempera paint.
