My students walk into our classroom, every day, full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They are a group of children who work hard at being an inspiration to themselves and to others. They enjoy incorporating what they have learned into real life experiences.
My students all live in developments known as the projects.
My school is a Title I school. Most of my students come from a life of poverty. They have entered my classroom two, three, and even four years behind their current grade level. All of my students, as well as those in the entire school, qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. Despite their challenges, my students come to school regularly excited, ready, and wanting to learn. They want to rise above their circumstances. Even though my students were labeled as being well-below grade level learners, if you didn't know them, you wouldn't know it. They take their learning seriously and want to improve academically, behaviorally, and socially in my classroom. My students love completing projects that challenge them.
Even though my students have academic challenges, they enjoy working together on projects. As a teacher, I love that they continue to think "BIG"! My students would like to create their own classroom monthly news magazine. With this magazine, the students will discuss positive things that are going on throughout their school and neighborhood. Through the birth of an idea from my students, my goal is to create a Journalism Club.
Lately, there has been nothing but negative news being displayed to the world.
I want to teach my students about the positive things that can come out of reporting the news. Audiences are constantly being told in the news about the negative things that are occurring at my students' school and their neighborhood. However, the positive things that are going on at their school and neighborhood outweighs the negative. Therefore, it will be the job of my students to display the positive comings and goings that are going on in their school and the community where they live. Through writing the news magazine, my students will begin a journey of mastering Common Core Standards that deal with opinion, nonfiction, narrative and research writing as well as incorporating technology into their project.
My students need a Microsoft Surface Go to use to design their classroom magazine as well as to write the articles that will go along with it. I already have a copier, printer, and ink cartridges that will be used to assist my students with the magazine project. The students will benefit from this project because they will be learning valuable writing skills and how to write as a team. It is my goal, that the new magazine program will take on a life of its own every school year.
