We're going to the San Francisco Zoo! At least we are hoping to go to the zoo. We need help with the cost of the bus to transport my 20 students and 5 parent chaperones to the zoo on June 2nd. This end-of-the-year field trip will be a culminating activity for our study of animals and their habitats. I have been teaching for over 20 years, and each year I have taken my class to the zoo. It is such an enriching experience for first graders to see up close the animals they have been learning about throughout the school year. This year I am teaching an English Language Development class(ELD). I have 20 first grade students. These wonderful kids come from ten different countries and speak nine different languages. At the beginning of the school year most of them did not speak English at all. Now, after hard work, determination, and lots of practice on the part of these young children, most of them are speaking English! Visiting the zoo will give them an opportunity to use their newly acquired language skills in an exciting and educational way! A trip off campus will give them a feeling of independence -- something they have certainly earned this year! Although I teach in an upper middle class school, most of my students are Title 1 students (free or reduced lunch). Through parent contributions we have gotten the money for admission costs to the zoo. We plan to share a bus with another class to reduce the transportation costs. But, we need help paying for our share of the schoolbus. Please consider helping us get to the zoo! Thanks in advance for your support.
