This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you were young, how exciting it was to open a brand new box of crayons? They had the distinctive new crayon smell, the colors were bright and pure, and the tips were sharp and ready to draw with. My students do not understand that joy because our crayons are old and broken.
My students are kind, caring individuals and enthusiastic learners.
Each of them has his or her own unique characteristics that make him or her special. The community in which my students live is very high poverty, often where multiple families live in single residences, many students move away due to financial hardship, and over eighty percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many families do not have extra money to purchase art supplies, so they only time many of them get to use materials such as crayons is in the art classroom.
My Project
I think that the art experiences that my students have in my classroom could be greatly improved simply with some new crayons to use. What we have now are old, tiny, broken pieces with no pointy edges for adding details. Students often have trouble finding the colors they need, and often "mess up" their drawings when they try to add details and end up with fat smudges of crayon on their papers. With new crayons to use, the students will be able to make more successful drawings, which will boost confidence in their abilities. When they are not so worried about whether or not their drawing will actually turn out, it frees up space in their brains for creativity and expression.
This is an opportunity to improve art classes not just for one short project, but all year long!
We use crayons throughout the year for many different projects, from portraits to crayon resist paintings to learning about blending colors. Please help us have an exciting, successful year in art!
