My students need books not only around their reading level, but geared towards their interests. Captain Underpants and Wimpy Kid books are the most sought after books in our library so we're looking for more!
Reading is a way to dive deep into your imagination. It allows you to learn about the world around you. It can enrich your vocabulary while transporting you to another world. A great book can hook you from the beginning to the very last page. My students are of various reading levels and interests. We currently use a Scholastic Read 180 program in our Language Arts room, however, many have exhausted the books and are looking for something different.
We took a vote in our classroom to gauge student interests in regards to different reading topics.
Many of our students like books similar to comics (like Captain Underpants), as well as scary stories (Goosebumps!).
Many of our students come from low income households. We have a large Hispanic population and quite a few are English Language Learners. We strive to give our students the best experiences possible because they are our community's future. I want to provide students with books of high interest and high quality so they can be successful within their reading intervention.
My Project
I currently teach a reading intervention program. Each semester students are required to read 2 books. Needless to say, we need A LOT of books as 45 books can be checked out at a time. Many of our students have been with us a couple years as well, so they have exhausted our library. Many of the books are outdated, torn, and have few copies. My goal is to update my personal library so students have direct access to books right at their fingertips that they enjoy.
New books bring an excitement to the classroom library.
I have tried my best to get new books during the school year but limited funds have made it difficult. When the winter semester started, I took a poll to determine what kinds of books my students would enjoy to have and would like to read for class. Captain Underpants, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the Dork Diaries series won by a landslide. These books also help our ESL students as pictures associated with texts are very beneficial to ELL students.
Not only will these books be a great resource for my students, but they will be more likely to reach their 2 book goal when they have a selection of books they enjoy. They will look forward to finishing their book so they can select another from our shiny, new collection! The books will be solely kept in the classroom and enjoyed for school years to come!
