There is nothing better than absorbing yourself in a great book. An amazing story can take you to far away lands, back in time or show you a life you could only dream of living.
My students are amazing!
They come from families who are mostly first to second generation Americans. Their parents have come here for a better life and in striving for this they work long hours. Many of my students come to school every day and remain in after school programs until their parents or someone they know is able to pick them up. They don't have constant access to video games and cable t.v. to entertain them, what they have are the books in my classroom library. They especially LOVE to read books that come in a series. They have formed a waiting list so that as soon as one student finishes a book in a series they can hand it off to the next student waiting to read it. They get tremendously excited when they advance to the next book.
My Project
Every morning my students rush into our classroom so that they can change their books in our classroom library. They really look forward to reading as well as picking out a new book. Books are a great way for my students to learn about the world while strengthening their reading comprehension, grammar and sentence structure knowledge. Since many of them come from homes where English is a second language, or not spoken at all, reading is a great way for them to improve their English. By having lots of book baskets I am able to keep the books in our library grouped in categories that will assist my students in choosing a book will both interest them and hold their attention.
Please help me to fill my classroom with great books that my students can enjoy and book baskets to help organize them.
My students love to read and I love being able to foster this love by providing books in my classroom for them to borrow. We cannot wait for these great new books to read and enjoy and the baskets to help keep them organized in our library!
