Help me give my students a calming place to regulate their bodies. This project will help add bean bags, lighting, and a basketball hoop to our Wellness Room which will serve my students 4K through Grade 12.
I am the Student Support Specialist in the School District of Hilbert. I lead our district in the areas of mental health, curriculum, and assessment. I teach social and emotional lessons to all of our students as well as body regulation skills. Hilbert School District is a small, rural district with 495 students in 4-year-old kindergarten through grade 12. We are located in northeast Wisconsin. We are located on one campus 4K through grade 12. Our students who receive free or reduced lunch are at 32%. Our population is 79% Caucasian., 18% Hispanic, 1% Native American, and 1% Asian ethnicities.
“A child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support.”
– Kate Middleton
I am the Student Support Specialist in the Hilbert School District. It is my focus to provide every student in our district 4K- Grade 12 a safe, nurturing, loving, and accepting environment. We are focused on building relationships and ensuring all children and staff focus on mental health and social and emotional needs. Self-care and regulation have become a priority in our district.
My Project
I have based my Wellness Room Project on my past practices and knowledge of my students' learning and regulation differences. Each student is so unique and I need to be prepared to meet all of their individual needs and learning styles. Studies show one of the best ways for students to learn is by providing movement, relaxation, and sensory opportunities to help each child reach their maximum potential. I will incorporate all of these to increase students' awareness and body regulation. This is crucial when teaching students social and emotional health.
Students are coming to school while facing many obstacles in their lives.
We, as educators, need to help our children deal with these struggles. Emotional and social learning is a must. We, as educators, must reach Maslow's Hierarchy before Bloom's Taxonomy. Our students cannot learn if their basic needs are not met. My project will help me create a safe environment where true social and emotional learning can take place.
My wish is our school environment to be a place where students and staff can come to feel safe, valued, and cared for. The items I have chosen for this project are lighting, bean bags, basketball hoop, and massage pad. These items will help my students to learn body regulation as they can "Maslow before they Bloom".
