My Students

Beginning the first day of school, we are counting down the days until our field trip to Washington DC! The fifth grade experience at our school is all about hands on learning, school family adventures and character building. Our kids leave us smart, confident, loved and feeling supported!

Most of our students are part of traditional rural families.

They come to us with lots of practical knowledge and have awesome rural skills. Most are hungry for knowledge and are excited about the opportunities at school. Our school is unique when it comes to field trip experiences. We believe taking students and families on big adventures builds knowledge in students but also builds a "school family" atmosphere. Our Kindergarteners travel to the beach on a three day trip and 95% of those children have a parent with them. Those children experience the beach and lots of related learning opportunities while parents are bonding and getting to know the families of children with whom they will be tied to throughout elementary school and beyond. Other grade levels take big trips during which the same learning and bonding takes place. The Washington Trip is a celebration and priceless learning experience for 5th graders who will leave us well equipped for middle school.

My Project

The item I am hoping to purchase will help students with the safety aspect of traveling to the city of Washington DC. As a teacher, I use brightly colored class shirts or bright name tags to help set my students apart from a crowd during field trips. For this three day trip, shirts would be too expensive to buy for three days and name tags are not a smart idea in a city atmosphere. The brightly colored bags I have chosen can be worn all three days of the trip and will be a functional part of their daily garb. students need to carry various items each day of the trip and this bag will hold what they need. Their bag will also be a great way to scan a crowd at the Lincoln Memorial for example, and find our students and keep them together.

All families look forward to this school adventure and we have almost all students accompanied by a parent.

Our families are mostly rural hard workers who save up for this trip. Our school also sponsors the students whose families are unable to fund the trip for their child. We also pay for chaperons for those children who are able to travel with us but an adult cannot accompany them. Taking care of this cost would help burdened families who are already paying $300 or more for this trip.
