Welcoming Immigrants and Refugees as New Scientists in America!
My students need engaging materials, such as a set of six Book:Ecosystems, four Big Science Ideas and interactive games such as Cycles of Life, Food Chains and Food Webs to help them learn new science information!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My amazing class is made up of thirty-five children who speak seventeen different languages and represent a beautiful array of cultural diversity. Although the students share a classroom, attend the same school and make up a portion of the students, all receiving free lunch, their individual stories are very different and close to my heart. My students are all newcomer SLIFE students. They have only been in the United States for a year or less and have limited or significant interruptions in their formal education history. They want to learn English and they want to learn about American culture. This is evident in their persistent hard work, attendance and the smiles that shine upon each of their faces.
My Project
My students need engaging materials, such as a set of six Book:Ecosystems, four Big Science Ideas and interactive games such as Cycles of Life, Food Chains and Food Webs to help them learn new science information! My students have recently come to the United States as immigrants and refugees. I want to continue to welcome them to an inviting and engaging environment. Making these children feel welcomed into a safe, inviting and stimulating environment is essential in promoting community and encouraging learning. The plastic trays will allow them to have their own science space to create and explore materials. The posters and signs will help them not only learn English, but will help each of them to understand that I believe they are an integral part of the classroom. The science books and board games will help them feel successful because they can look at pictures and models to help them understand the content even when not knowing the language. The posters of biomes and energy transfer are visually appealing and will be a part of a science station set up with the hot dot markers and picture cards. This will help in the acquisition of language. Small groups are a great way to help students learn a new language and these materials will be used for cooperative learning!
