Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher, teaching in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I have 18 children in my class. My students do not have a lot of money and therefore have limited resources, especially when it comes to art supplies. Thus enters my idea to create a mini art gallery, right outside my hallway. I am hoping to get a set of watercolors and a sharpie marker for every student in my class. The black sharpie markers will allow my students to outline their work, so as to make their pictures stand out even more. I am also hoping to receive frames, so that I can display their art. I feel that by displaying the children's work, they will begin to take pride in what they are doing and avoid what I call, "The Rush Job". Using water colors will motivate my students to just that. These watercolors will be used the entire year and then, each child will be able to take them home. (Hopefully not too many of the sets will be all brown!) Watercolor paints will also allow my children to really work with blending and the mixing of colors - something crayons just aren't able to do. I want my children to feel like real artists, and I think watercolor paints will do the trick. Who knows, maybe years from now, one of their paintings will be hanging in the real Metropolitan Museum of Art?
