Welcome to Biology... Let's Have Some Fun!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello, I am a NYC high school science teacher. Next school year I will be teaching biology and marine, classes to 9th and 10th grade students. As with most city schools our student population is extremely diverse: racially, economically and academically.

Science is a hands-on discipline, students learn best when they complete and write about activities or experiments that they conduct themselves!

Unfortunately, we all know the current budgets crisis has had a great impact on school budgets and so funding for supplies for 14 biology lab classes is beyond the financial capabilities of our school. During labs classes, when students should ideally being doing activities, students usually complete paper labs that simulate the real deal. So it is up to the individual teacher to find fun ways to stimulate our student's minds and get them excited about the topics we are learning.

My Project

In order to make science lab class fun for our students I have requested 8 Molecules of Life Model Kits. These kits will allow students, early in the term, to DO something in lab. They will the building blocks of life: amino acids, glucose, nucleotides and lipids from plastic atoms of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulfur. They will then show how these buildings blocks are joined together to form the compounds of our bodies – proteins, DNA, carbohydrates and fats. Later in the term we will be able to take these model kits out again and show how the enzymes of the digestive system break these compounds back down into their building blocks! The students will be able to see with their own eyes processes that occur on the molecular level in every cell of their body.

Biology can be a difficult subject, full of an almost entirely new language of scary words and concepts that seem so far removed from a teenager's daily life.

But, in biology every unit builds on the last and if students tune out early they will be hard pressed to succeed. I know that if I can get them excited about coming to class; if I can make them curious about what is coming next from the beginning of the year then the battle is already half won! I just need your help to succeed. Together we can show my students it's still OK to be curious about the world around them.
