Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have an incredible Weight Room space that is used during the day by PE teachers and their classes for workouts, weight lifting units, circuit and strength training, etc, and after school by sports teams, the boxing club, the weight lifting club, and staff! The Weight Room has not seen an upgrade in longer than I have been a teacher here (13 years), and we have several broken machines that are simply taking up space. In January 2026, we will have a junk haul service come out to the school to remove old and broken equipment, so that we can make room for a total upgrade! We recently just had the mirrors replaced, as they were held up with red duct tape in the places where they had been smashed and broken. Even this upgrade has been incredible to witness and our students' excitement. The PE department was able to purchase 2 new machines last year that we will build and install as soon as the space becomes available in January, and we are looking to put a treadmill and Smith Machine as well with this DonorsChoose project. The Smith Machine is a versatile machine that lends well to beginners learning to use the Olympic barbell and different power lifts. It's a safer option for beginners and young athletes as well. Additionally, after a survey, students report that they would like a treadmill as we are removing 2 broken Olyptical Machines and several broken stationary bikes.
