My students need weighted blankets to help with their sensory needs. We need the supplies to make these blankets-towels, zipper duvets, sand and ziploc bags.
My class is a self-contained class for young students with Autism. My school has one other Autism classroom as well as a Special Education Pre-K program and a Kindergarten class for students with significant developmental delays. These classes often serve students with Autism as well.
Students with Autism frequently have developmental delays, anxiety, and sensory processing difficulties.
These students tend to have trouble coping and regulating their behavior. They need opportunities for sensory breaks from learning where they can calm and de-stress.
My Project
My project idea is to have a Make and Take session for special education teachers in my school. The supplies are enough for 5 teachers to make a project. Each teacher would make a weighted blanket to take back to their classroom to use for their students with Autism and sensory processing difficulties. The bags, duct tape and towels will secure the weight (sand) and prevent punctures. The high quality of the zippered cover will allow for frequent washing and a long-life so that the blankets will safely meet the students' sensory needs in the classroom for years to come.
Students with Autism often become over-stimulated.
Deep pressure or applied weight can have a calming effect that decreases anxiety and enables them to better focus their attention.
