The requested funds will provide a weekly magazine with science and social studies topics for a class of 25 1st grade students. Each child will receive an individual 1st grade level magazine on a weekly basis. Weekly Reader Grade 1 provides curriculum-related content that grabs students' attention, making them more avid readers and more eager learners. Plus, four FREE Big Issues arrive each month with exclusive giant-size editions that encourage class participation and help with word recognition. These magazines will promote literacy and give each child the opportunity to read a piece of print media in class and at home with his/her family. Non-fiction topics dealing with science and social studies will help with reading comprehension and provide real-life, true pieces of literature for students to read on an appropriate reading level.
