I want to begin by acknowledging how wonderful it was to have this proposal funded last year. Having the weekly readers in our classroom allowed my students and me the opportunity to explore various non-fiction topics using oral and written forms. Each week, my students were eager to see what the new magazine would be about. The magazines contributed to the development of comprehension skills while providing my students with non-fiction material that is grade appropriate. It is often difficult to find non-fiction for younger students that they can not only understand, but enjoy as well. While last year I used Weekly Reader magazines with my 3rd and 4th graders, this year I am ready to use the magazine again with the 1st and 2nd graders that I will be teaching at the Children's Workshop School in New York City. Our school prides itself on being a very close community of students, teachers, and parents in a public school setting. Our school is extremely diverse and therefore brings together children of all ethnicities and economic backgrounds. The purpose of implementing Weekly Reader magazines into the classroom is to enrich student's reading and writing skills within the non-fiction genre. Non-fiction tends to be more challenging for students to comprehend since it doesn't follow a typical story structure. While reading non-fiction students also have to be synthesizing and processing the information that they are reading. Weekly Readers provide student's with age appropriate reading material. It grabs students' attention while fine-tuning their grammar and vocabulary skills. In addition to having rich non-fiction reading material, students will also be responding to the magazine each week through teacher created response questions and writing activities that help extend and deepen comprehension. Having a Weekly Reader subscription would be extremely beneficial to not only our reading curriculum, but also are writing, social studies, and science studies. This educational magazine will engage my students with its age appropriate topics and colorful illustrations. It will make them eager to learn about current events since it is important that learning extends beyond the four walls of a classroom and includes discussions around world events. In addition, Weekly Readers will serve create opportunities for shared reading experiences during whole class instruction. Thank you for your consideration.
